Is anyone else out there more than a little concerned over the vastly different paths Canada and the U.S. have taken when it comes to funding science?
In the U.S., Barack Obama signed a new stem cell research law that calls for massive amounts of new funding. The American scientific community rejoiced because the move is a major departure from the presidency of George Bush.
But while scientists south of the border are enjoying an influx of money for research, scientists in Canada are lamenting Stephen Harper’s budget, which calls for drastic cuts in grant-funding programmes. Many scientists in Canada are worried that the Conservatives’ actions will have an ominous effect on scientific research in Canada.
As you can read here, Harper’s significantly reducing funding for science could have a major impact on Canadian science.
